Capelin Spawning in Newfoundland, Summer 2023

With geese migrating by the thousands above the University of Manitoba campus and the first frosty mornings signaling the coming winter, we here at the Davoren Lab cannot help but miss our summer field work in Newfoundland! This past summer was exciting for the communities of northeast Newfoundland with capelin spawning at beach and subtidal sites. These pictures and videos from July were captured at sites that the Davoren Lab regularly monitors for spawning activity. When capelin spawn at these sites, we can sample adults to measure health metrics (body condition, length, mass), as well as eggs and larvae to measure site-specific productivity!
